The Relationship between Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and Helicobacter Pylori in the Mid-Euphrates Region of Iraq

Abstract

Background: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the common endocrinopathies. Infertility may result from persistent infections. Two common causes of infertility are Helicobacter pylori infection and PCOS. As far as we know, no research has connected H. pylori seropositivity to PCOS. The aim: investigate the impact of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infections on metabolic and hormonal factors, as well as long-term inflammation indicators, in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Materials and techniques: We examined 40 healthy women of the same age and 60 women with PCOS. We examined sex steroid-binding globulin (SSBG), total testosterone (TTest), oestradiol, C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and IgG antibodies to H. pylori. These parameters were evaluated depending on whether an H. pylori infection was present or not. Results: Depending on whether an H. pylori infection was present or not, the following outcomes were observed: In the control group, 17.5% of participants were found to have raised IgG antibodies to H. pylori, while their CRP and homocysteine levels increased and their CRP concentration decreased. H. pylori infection was much more prevalent in PCOS patients (χ² = 7.7; P < 0.01). Conclusions: It has been demonstrated that PCOS patients have a higher prevalence of elevated blood CRP and IL-6 levels. The findings demonstrate a strong correlation between H. pylori infection and PCOS, which exacerbates the metabolic and hormonal issues already present and raises CRP and IL-6 levels.
